As I was waiting for a fly in to the GBH nest the other evening, this young fledgling gave me a smile I couldn't resist. As my 400DO is in for maintenance, I went out to Wako with my starter lens (100-400 IS USM). I added the tc for close ups like this. I just love the way their feathers look like fur!! I wish I had the PP skills to remove the one OOF branch running parallel above the bill.

Hi David I know sometimes you can't move around much in the boardwalk but taking a step to the left would have cleaned up the bg, no branches !!

Good PS work Kevin ... one suggestion might want to try the sharpening on a layer so it could be applied to head area only.

I do like the 100-400 a lot and does produce sharp images ... with a converter haven't seen a critically sharp one up to date. Best to use straight and if you need more reach use a 1.6 crop factor camera.

All good stuff above. Nice work on the repost but a bit too warm for me. The first and most important question: the 100-400 at what focal length?

Alfredo, on a tripod with good technique, the 1-4 is perfectly capable of making very sharp images. I have even done the same with the 2X just to prove that it can be done (though we do not recommend the latter).

Lastly, this one looks fairly sharp to me.

This was at full extension 560 mm and wide open (F8), handheld and the subject was moving (coming out of a stretch). It was late evening sun and I believe I overdid the saturation (reason for too much warmth)! That is a good job on the PP, Kevin! As always, thanks for the learnings!!!!!

Nice image, David. The repost looks cleaner.
