Hoping the PS experts can help me on this one. This is the first time I've experienced a halo as a result of processing an image. It is due to noise reduction run on the image after downsizing for posting. I used the magic wand to select the background and ran the noise reduction filter in PS. The settings were:
Strength: 2
Preserve Details: 4%
Reduce Color Noise: 50%
Sharpent Details: 0%
Remove JPEG artifact unchecked
Despite the halo, I like the pose, the feather detail in the near wing, eye contact and the light. I look forward to being able to repair it.

Hi Beth Just checking Do you have the USM turned off in the noise program? Noise Ninja has some USM applied to maintain sharpness but does produce halos, best to keep it off.
The only sharpening aspect in that filter window is Sharpen Detail and that slider is at 0%. I didn't expand the selection prior to the NR as I thought that would actually introduce the halo. I'll try that later and see if it doesn't solve the problem. Thanks for the input, Al and Axel!
Beth, in this case, before you do anything to the bird, select the sky, invert the selection and Modify>Contract by 1 pixel. If you want, put it in anther layer so the marching ants don't' bother you.
Then aplly S/H or sharpening and you wont have a halo.
Thanks, Al, Axel and Fabs, I think I was able to tame the halo. In addition to changing the way I selected the image, I had to go back to the RAW file to use the Lens Correction tab. Here's the corrected version:
