It felt good to hear the red-winged blackbirds doing their thing down in Wakodahatchee. We'll be hearing them up here in NY soon enough, if not already. I can't wait for warmer weather!
You have a beautiful rendition of a red-winged blackbird here, Beth. Feather detail, colors, pose, head angle and eye contact are all excellent. The soft BG adds emphasis on your subject. I find that my gaze goes straight to the red shoulder and then to the eye (great catchlight!). I only with he were on a more natural perch. Good job all round, especially on your feather detail and shallow DOF.
Nice capture, Beth. Hey, I remember this guy!
I agree with Joel's comments.
I think the BG could use a bit more oomph to it. Might try a bit more contrast and saturation for my taste. But I love the softness of the BG just as well.

Very nice blackbird Beth. The arrival of the red-winged blackbirds is something I look forward to every year, as it solidifies that spring is really going to happen. As mentioned, a more natural perch would be preferred. His feet are quite close together - was he holding something between them? Very nice details on the subject, and the BG is quite nice too.
Thanks, everyone. I do agree about the perch. I have a number of other birds on reeds but this guy was physically the closest bird I was able to approach (he hung out while people walked right past him, actually) and a nice, relatively uniform background. In my recollection, he didn't have anything in his claws.
