After a weekend seminar with one of the world's most celebrated wildlife photographers Franz Lanting, it seemed most fitting to post a photograph depicting behavior and environment. Franz stressed that the more environment and behavior are included in our photographs, the more powerful they become.
So here's a picture of a juvenile male Magnificent Frigatebird drying his wings in his roosting spot in morning light. You can see his baby blue pouch beginning to form on his throat which will one day become bright red and his entire body will become dark brown. Can't wait to get back for more of these, although they are difficult to photograph b/c they are so close and so large.
He looks very happy. The exposure looks like a pretty good compromise between the whites and blacks based on the light. I like the composition, with the tree on left balancing the bird. I wish his tail was a bit less blocked by branches.
I've always loved this image. Not many people can photograph these guys this close. Excellent composition behavior and exposure control. Thank goodness for manual!!
