    Default Beanbag and AF

When you place the lens on the bean bag and move the lens, the possibility exists that you would have moved the focusing ring just as you are about to press the shutter release and the resulting image will be out of focus.

I know that working with panningplate on top of your beanbag would avoid this problem. But I was wondering if there would be a function to disable the focusing ring on the Nikon D3 and D300?

    Thanks ahead!

    Jasper,

While using 300mm2.8 lens on BLUBB I ran into similar problems. I had to be careful with lens placement on bean bag. If focus ring rests on the bag, I had issues focusing on moving subjects. I used M1 quick release arms from Wimberley and lens sits a bit high.

Take a look at this link

    Jasper,
What lens are you working with.

On my AF-S 600mm I have 3 options on the lens itself.

A AF only, focus ring does not affect the focus.
    A/M AF with manual over-ride
    M Manual focus only.

    Hi James,

Thanks for letting me know. It seems like the 300/2.8VR doesn't have this option :-S Pretty annoying!

I often use beanbag with my 600mm VR which has 3 focus options :

A/M : AF priority, but possible manual override
M/A : Manual override priority, but AF still working
    M : Manual.

The A/M mode works well on beanbag.

Okay I have a Canon system but the concept is still the same with the focussing ring, the way I get round is to put the foot of the tripod mount on the beanbag this then gives enough space to avoid the MF ring being inadvertently turned.

    Steve.
You can secure a gimbal or ball head directly to the bean bag mikeojohnson mentions above. Using only the lens foot negates using the larger surface area of the bean bag for support.

    Best,

    Chas
