I came across this fella last evening while walking along my local stream. All I had with me was my 30D and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Fortunately it was enough since he let me get very close. I spent 30+ minutes sitting on the bank watching him and taking photographs. I was hoping he would do something but other than turning his head to look around and stretching his neck, he just stood there on one leg in mid-stream posing.
Sharp and a nice COMP but the ordinary light and lack of action make the image, well, ordinary. Would it have been possible to have gotten right down to the bird's level or to stream level?

ps: Wanted to see how it would look without the blue cast. Used the average blur color balance technique.

Hey Ed,
I like Artie's re-post without the blue cast. I agree with Denise......much tougher in our neck of the woods than in Fla. I would have preferred it without the rocks up top......and I don't feel you can get rid of it with a crop and not make it too tight in the frame.....this may have been one of the times to try and get a bit higher.....to minimize the BG shoreline...........or move to get more of the river in the BG.....but again....not easy here as they are extremely skittish. Not bad considering all the obstacles.
When I posted, I felt there was a bit too much blue and the image needed to be warmed up a tad. Also I knew the rocks at the top would be a concern. So I am glad I was on the same wavelength with those two. I did reduce the blue cast through a combination of increasing the color temp and tint just a tad in Lightroom.
As far as activity, I waited over a half hour as darkness was setting in. He was in no hurry to do anything. I thought about tossing a rock into the pool but that wouldn't have been nice. now would it.:(
Finally, I must say that this particular GBH was the least skittish GBH I think I have ever encountered here.
Again thanks for the comments. They are all much appreciated.
