We were leaving Estero Lagoon after a so-so morning on 3-14 when this bird flew in and landed right in front of us. I made several like this one right off the bat.

Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the EOS-1D Mark III. ISO 400. Evaluative metering -1/3 stop: 1/2000 at f/7.1.

I used 45 point AAFPS to keep the bird's eye above the horizontal center line.

The gorgeous bird moved away from us a bit as it hunted for fish but in order to create a head and neck VERT I needed to move back so I made my way back about two yards being careful not to slip on the mud.

Same as above except Evaluative metering at zero: 1/1250 sec. at f/7.1. This EXP was much better as I did not have to lighten it as I did with the image above.

I like the incredible detail of the head portrait and the variegated BKGR in the VERT.

Gorgeous - prefer the tighter one myself - but I like up close and personal :) Good info about moving yourself physically. Thanks Artie

Just great! The detail and colors on the first one are
fantastic. The second is excellent too. Good zoom :)
Same bird and two different feels.

I don't understand: what is AAFPS?

    Cheers, Ilija

AAFPS = "All Autofocus Focusing Points Selected." With the MIII, all 45 points are active. With the 50D, all nine points are lit up.

AAFPS - that's easy it stands for . . . Australian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery :)

No, not really it's: Automatic Autofocus Point Selection

Hey Kevin, Actually, your answer is probably more correct than mine (even though they pretty much mean the same thing).

Acutally, I slept till 4:45 this morning which is well on the late side for me :) :) :)

IAC, thanks! And big time thanks for your mmembership support.
