I am very anxious for the lakes to thaw and loons returning. This is virtually full frame so only added canvas can make it roomier. I often see in photos the front white patch as just pure white-this image shows there are indeed very subtle markings in there. Canon 300mm f2.8 x 1.4, loon popped up just within minimum focus. F8 handheld

Loons and spring are on the way Jeff! Ice is starting to soften here. We look forward to ice out after Maple Sugar Sunday, the last Sunday in March. I can't wait. I hope to post a bunch of life time keepers. I hope you do too!

Yes, the soft light helped you nail those whites.
I would add some canvas, at least to the top and right.
    Way to go!

If we set the excellent exposure management aside for a second, this image is impressive for the intimacy of the subject with the viewer. This is thanks primarily to the low angle, and the sharpness of the head & eye. Very nice.

I ditto the comments made by Russ... great pose and detail of this close-up. The extra canvas may be interesting to see, but this is great as is.

    Jeff:

Very nice and classic loon. Good job on the breast, as I usually struggle with the exposure balance too. As Fabs mentioned, the soft light really helped, and it captures how I usually see them, dim light, maybe a hint of mist.

I am curious about the back story on this image. Were you in a Kayak, lying down on a boat, etc? I am amazed you could get near full frame with that lens. Do tell!

    Again, a lovely picture.

Also, I am curious if you or others can comment on the dull bill. I have seen it both ways, and don't know if that tells us anything about the age/sex, breeding status?

    Cheers

    Randy
