Default Planning a trip to NE in August

I'm planning a trip in August to the NE (around Maine)-not sure where-Would like to know if there is anywhere that is especially good for photography(birds or wildlife) that time of year, also plan on hiking and camping. Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks.

At that time of the year and a lot further south, Jamaca Bay should be hopping. But sine you are from NJ, you knew that;)

Acadia might be great for birding/hiking, for photography you could look into trips to Machias Island for razorbills, murres and puffins. August may be a bit late for that, though.

Late August in NE is best at SOUTH BEACH and Monomoy Is. in Chatham Cape Cod MA.

Roseate Tern is the specialty among many other sea and shore birds as well as Gray Seals.

Plum Island in Newburyport MA is great birding spot all year but especially during migration.
    (Parker River NWR)

Also a good PELAGIC TRIP or a Whale watch trip for sea birds is fine at that time.
The Brookline Bird Club organizes trips at that time.

Machias Seal Island in Maine is great in May, not sure about August.

Never been there but Acadia NP is the premiere hiking/camping site.
Also White Mnts in NH is Great Place all year.

    Cheers, Ilija

Acadia is a great place to combine a vacation and photo trip. There are a lot (I mean a lot!) of hikes. Beautiful scenery all around and wildlife. It gets crowded during the summer, so book early. You can't go wrong in Acadia.

Another spot in late Summer is Lubec. Keep track of the postings at this link for Maine: http://birdingonthe.net/birdmail.html

    Denise,

We vacation in Acadia almost every year. This year we will be spending about two weeks there in June and we will also be doing the Puffin trip once again.

There are a number of things you could consider.

First, check the Maine Audubon website. There are a number of activities there that may tickle your fancy. Among other things, they do a great pelagic trip out of Bar Harbor but that is later in September. We did that two years ago. Went out on a huge catamaran from Bar Harbor Whale Watch. It was terrific.

Second, be sure to make your way over to Schoodic peninsula (next one up from Bar Harbor). Great seascapes and good birding over there.

Third, you could look at one of the Moose photo safaris out of Millinocket (a couple of hours from Bar Harbor and Acadia).

And of course Acadia itself has lots of great photo ops. I'll be doing a lot of wildflower photography as well as landscapes and seascapes while there.

Acadia and the Central California Coast are my two favorite places in the U.S.

Maine is one of my favorite places in the world. It's just more amazing in fall. There's some amazing scenics out there with lighthouses and coastlines.... acadia is a must of course; camden, boothbay area, portland, lubec,

ask Grady, he's from up there for more detailed areas to visit
