Neat image. I like the contrast between light and dark. If so inclined, I'd lighten the eye in the reflection a bit. The bright spots on the bill seem brighter in the reflection. Just interesting to me since the eye seems darker than the real one.

    Steve,

Agree with you 100% on bright spots on bill. Thanks

Good observations by Steve. I also wish for a tiny bit better head turn, and the image needs some CW rotation. The bird stands out very well from the all black surroundings, and the breeding colours add a very cool splash of colour. Very nice!!

You don't see them this deep in the water too often. Interesting us of flash and well exposed. I would have preferred to see the head angled towards you here however.

    Sid:

Striking image. I have not seen one so deep before. Was it fishing, or just moving from one place to another?

To my eye, the lores are a bit oversaturated, at least on my work monitor (uncalibrated). Since no one else seems concerned, it is probably fine.

I would love to hear some of the back story on this image.

    Thanks Sid

    Randy,

Under expose the subject by almost 1&1/2 stop to reduce ambient light and and hit with flash with 1&1/2 stop to compensate for reduce light. White reflects the light and black absorbs light. Only reflected light hits sensor and helps in capturing subject only. Works only with white birds in dark surroundings. some level adjustment in post processing to get black background. Still working on this technique.
