I was happy to get this close up image (no cropping) of an European Nuthatch today (again in the rain...).
I like the bird looking straight in my eyes (that's what I feel) :) and I hope, that this one is ok for the HAP...
The bird was resting at that place for may be a minute or two, so I had the opportunity to make different images and I tried both: vertical and horizontal. I am not sure if the bird is too tight in the frame? But because of the straight look to the viewer (and therefore a bit "out of the frame") I hope it's ok?
Next point: the depth of field; do you think that it is enough? For me it looks good, because it takes my eye in a curve from the tail down to the head and the eye. But do you think it would have been better to get more dof?
And last Question: you may ask for more saturation? I like the soft grey and light brown in the plumage and the grey again in the BG; but does it look flat to you?
Lots of Questions....

Hope for your critique and comments,
Best regards,

Two thumbs up from the HAP. Nice to get a nuthatch full frame with a 500. Great eye contact, sharpness, and BG. I like the green vegetation on the tree trunk and the water droplets on the bird.
Hi Axel, don't you think, that the bird needs the place in front of the bill?
As I wrote above, I have some vertical images, but I am afraid that the bird is a bit tight in the frame?
First, I really like it ! The water drops are a nice touch.
Would love to see one of your verticals as well.
Now, for your questions ...
Head angle looks great to me.
It may be a tad tight at the top.
The pose makes for a tough composition. I suspect I would prefer a vertical original
in this situation but, for a horizontal format, I would actually add canvas to the right
and crop an equal amount from the left leaving the left edge just inside of the two bright
leaves on the tree trunk. Was going to give an example but it would crop off part of your
copyright. Try it and see what you think.
I think the DOF is perfectly fine as presented.
In an ideal world, more DOF may have been even better if you could have also maintained the clean background,
but given the low light you were dealing with, I think you did great to get down to f/6.3.
The saturation looks fine.
It does look a bit flat to me but I think that can be addressed by a slight boost in contrast.
Rosl,
I like the crop and feel the inclusion of the tree adds to the overall impact and interest. My eyes are drawn to the eye and back of the bird and the water is an extra bonus. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for taking time to look at my image and write down your comments. I am happy, that you seem to like the image. :D
Thanx for the ideas!
Hi Mike, thank you for your comment. I understand, what you are thinking about. I had the feeling that it is too tight for the bird's toes to cut the tree as you mention now; but I understand that your idea is to get the bird's eye more to the left? Right?
