    Default RE: HDR

I was just looking around the net, reading up on HDR...
    1) Can you can merge to HDR using CS4?
    2) To get those real, surreal looking skies do you have to buy Photomatix software?

Paul, You can download a free version of photomatrix-it is not the Pro- but you will get a feel for it.

I don't know about CS4 but HDR merges in CS3 don't come close to being as good as Photomatix.
    Try it, you'll like it:D.

    Default Works well inCS4!

Yes. HDR works well in CS4. I've heard it is better than CS3. Use Adobe Bridge, select the images. Go to Tools/Photoshop/Merge to HDR. Photoshop automatically aligns the images, and theoretically you don't need a tripod. Anyway, use a tripod. If you have CS4 already try it out. regards~Bill

    Paul,

CS4 Merge to HDR is still no where near as powerful as dedicated software like Photomatix Pro. If you really want to use this technique third party is still the only way to go.

CS4 works as others have pointed out

    just personal opinion ...
I find HDR images tend to look quite fake, be it Photoshop or Photomatix
They do not re-create what you say with your eyes

I think it depends on who does the processing. I have seen some very extreme HDR processing, but I tend to lean towards a more realistic approach. This may not be a great image, but as you can tell by the shadows, it was shot around 1-2pm. This was in the middle of July(100°+ days). I used HDR to open up the shadows and I may have overdone the saturation. I don't think the rocks were quite so intense.

I must say I'm not much of a fan of HDR either, but some people seem to do the processing very well. See images by Michael Pancier here on BPN in the Landscapes forum, for example. Here is one:
