This was taken very early in the morning at a local pond in the only area that wasn't frozen.....near a drain that ran under the road. The hoodies would float out....very wary and cautious of us.....and for an instant....they would be in an area with a beam of light spotlighting them......but the water would be dark..only about 12 inches in diameter.....so I concentrated on 2 spots. Many attempts....as there were 100's of ducks around....very few clean shots....this was one of the female??...that I enjoyed.
Canon 1D Marklll with the Sigma 300-800mm lens at 800mm , manual exposure for 1/2000 sec at f6.3 and ISO 800. Noise Ninja run on the BG and slight crop top and front.

I have to say that this is probably my favorite bird image that I've seen from you Roman! Very dramatic, well executed, and nicely composed.

    Dramatically beautiful, very Romanasque :)
Colors are striking and placing in the frame works.

Beautiful, dramatic lighting. And smart shooting ... like a sniper waiting for that one fleeting moment. Nice job!

This is such a dramatic image! The lighting and dark background work so well with this merganser. Great eye contact, too. Congrats!

Sweet image Roman. The silver-gray color of the duck contrasts very nicely with the BG and the splash of color from the eye, bill, and crest give just the right amount of spark.

Superb image Roman - exceptional detail and beautiful lighting - A hint of shadow detail would've put it over the top for me.

Not much to add Roman except that the light and the details make this such an interesting and dramatic image, well done!
