We were so lucky to see this least bittern at Wakodahatchee last week just at the end of rather slow afternoon. It wandered out from under the leaves and immediately attracted a lot of attention. It mainly stayed in its typical crouched down position but due to the use of a call from the iBird Explorer on the iPhone (mine ;)), it extended its neck like this for a few moments.
A very fun picture. He really wondered who was talking there.
I like the sharpness and exposure. I very much like the scallopped framing provided by the large leaves to the left.
I am not so wild about the lower left corner, and might crop just a little to reduce its mass/impact on the image. Probably a bit from the bottom, and a bit from the left.
Hi Beth,
You've got to love those necks!..Very nice exposure control and I'm debating the crop from the bottom......the left I agree with...and it will further accentuate the long neck pose.....but the bottom may clip the virtual feet. May play around with the idea....as it could also be an interesting portrait.
Thanks very much! I pretty much agree that there is quite a bit of greenery to the left (although I do like the way they look J) but regarding the crop, I think I was thinking along the lines of Roman’s comment. I didn’t want to cut off the feet or center the bird too much by cropping in from the left. It was already a pretty heavy crop so I’m not sure how it will look as a portrait but I’ll give both suggestions a shot when I get home later. Thanks again!
