These birds are amusing as the often behave like domestic fowls scratching for food and dashing around at each other to maintain the pecking order. Limpopo province , South Africa

I like the morning light, flying dust and debris but would have preferred a slightly less blurred foreground - I will buy more beans to stuff the beanbag higher next time:)

I like the COMP and the pose. It looks a bit light and way too pink. I would try a big SAT reduction with the reds.

What a cool image. I love the prehistoric look of this species.

Thanks for the opinions and advice. I have reprocessed the raw file using a lower/higher colour temperature to cool the warmth and altered the tones a bit. I always find it difficult to know whether to try and achieve a neutral image or one that reflects what I saw at the time - this was shortly after sunrise so was lit by a very pink light source and the initial image matches my recollection of the scene. The lightness was partially a result of suspended dust due to the the combined scratchings of the flock.

    Hi Tony,

I like the re-post better. Could you live with the version below?

Yes, at times it can be difficult deciding between the rich colors early and late in the day or a more neutral version. I usually aim for something in between.

I've never seen this species and don't know whether your repost or Artie's post is closer to reality.

Great low angle and flying debris. I prefer the later versions which show the black and white plumage and head colour and detail better. Well done.

I think I like the first repost a touch better, but a lot of people think I like things over saturated.

This is a great image of a lovely bird. I prefer the warmer versions which are more evocative of the Africa I know. Perhaps the ideal image would be the one between the two versions you've posted, Tony. You did really well to get this killer shot - especially from such a low angle; I love the dust being kicked up.

Love the pose and especially the low angle. The image looks much better darker, but I think a color temperature between the last two versions would be perfect. Well done.

    Thanks for the input Arthur,
This version just looks too cold to me. I guess I have too much feeling tangled up in the heat and dust from being face down in it while taking the picture :D

Thanks everyone for your opinions and comments. This has been a great learning experience for me. It is interesting how individual our feelings about colour are. My feelings are still that for me the warmer versions recreate more of what I saw and experienced but it is really valuable to have other opinions and reactions to an image.
