Took this shot on New Year's Day. We've been fortunate to have a Hawk Owl overwintering nearby this year. I spent quite some time trying to get a decent in-flight capture. This was the best of my many attempts. Do they ever move quick!!!
Nikon D90, 300m f/4, 1.4X TC, iso 640, f/5.6. The crop is right against the left edge of the frame, but there is more room available below.
Looking forward to your C&C
Thanks!
Hi Graham - Nice - exposure looks spot on - You have a good HA and eye contact - I like the Wing up pose.
Does feel a little tight on the left - IMHO just needs a bit more room for him to fly into - the extended wing is what makes it feel tight - you could add some canvas to the LHS.
This is great as far as I'm concerned Graham. I do think a little room to the left would be great but I feel like this, If the owl is in good sharp focus and it's all in the frame you did great. I hope to someday get a hawk in flight pic somewhere near as good as this. :D Good job.
Hi Graham,
Nicely done, the details are superb, I like the capture angle and flight banking position...the color rendition is dead on...I too would like to see a tad more room on the left side of the frame...good show...
The room to the left is easy to make in PS Love the pose and sharpness, all you could wish for is a slightly different close wing position but love it as presented !!! btw That lens performs well with the converter !!! Big Congrats !!!
Thanks for the comments! As suggested I'm going to try and add some canvas in front of the bird (perhaps double the empty space that is there right now). I feel I should mention that I purchased Arther Morris' Digital Basics file last week and it was really helpful in achieving this result. I attempted to work on this image shortly after I photographed it, but wasn't happy at all. My second attempt (with the DB file as a guide) is much, much, better. This time around it is much sharper, and has a lot more 'pop'.
