Huge crop - a tad more DOF would have been good - didn't have a tripod or flash with me - could have gone with a higher ISO but light was fallingg rapidly and still it would not have bought me a higher f stop whilst still having a shutter speed I could handhold.
Btw for the burrowing owls we use a technique late in the day for dof. Stop down to f 64 with a with a shutter speed of 1/15 or so then adjust the ISO to get a reasonable ambient exp.
Since the owl (tight image) will be lit by the flash as main light basically it will be sharp but the bg won't be black.... will be a little blurred .... Neat !!! About the only way to maximize the dof !!! With a 600 and two extension tubes is no much !!!
Hi Al - thanks for the tip :) :) - Dont know if I will be seeing this guy again :( Have not sighted them since the bushfires in our area - their favoruite perch was pretty badly burnt up. Finegrs crosssed they survived.
