    Default 800 mm question

I am a Nikon shooter and have been waiting for the 600 VR lens for perhaps 6 months. My dealer can not get any and I wonder if I should give up.
    So ....
I am wondering about the Sigma 800. I could always get the Canon 800 and a Canon body, but I would rather not shoot two brands.
    So ....
if any Canon shooters have shot with both the Canon 800 lens and the Sigma 800 can you tell me differences in AF speed and IQ.

Hi Allan - I have the Sigma 300-800 zoom and NiKON D3 -- I find it to be very good - I am sure the AF speed is not in the same league as the nikon 600 but then I didn't need to sell my kids to get it either.

The zoom range is just so versatile and IQ is very very good across the range, I have been more than happy with it. I imagine the straight 800 would be fairly comparable maybe a fractionaly faster AF.

Lance, thanks for your comments. If I get the Sigma, it will be the 800 prime. However, you seem to think the af would be slower.
I have the D300 and a 400 VR. I find that there is more hunting with the tc attached than I like.

Anything with a converter will be slower Allan !!! Btw that straight 800 weighs in at around 14 pounds if I'm not mistaken? Something that big would like trying out first before buying !!!

True. I have the 400 VR and always use that on a tripod. At times I need something longer and want the 600 VR - but that is seeming impossible to get. :(
