Default White Winged Crossbill at work

This shot is from my first real outing with my new Canon 50D. Weather was overcast and cold. There's so much to learn with this new camera, and I have many shots with better head angle and all, but DOF was limited. I guess I should have jacked up the ISO, and there will be more oppotrunities. Having a ball at this point.
50D, 100-400 @370, 1/200 sec @ f 5.6, hand held, 0 EV. Very minor crop to remove distracting pine cone edge on left side

    Hi Dave

What was your ISO? Did real well holding steady at 1/200 sec but a little safety never hurts.

As presented would take some form the bottom and agree with you on the head angle, parallel to the plane would look better. It is pleasing as presented.

For noise would suggest shooting some target images at different ISO with light and dark bg. Easy to tell how far you can push !!!

Thanks Alfred. Im sorry I forgot to post the ISO. This shot was at ISO 400. I'm still learning this bodies abilities and am slowly dialing in settings as I go. I'll also give the light and dark backround test a try. I'm also told that noise will show itself very readily in a clear bue sky.

Hi Dave, New camera! Great for you!! I wish I had waited to get the 50D instead of the 40D but oh well. I am anxious to see your experiments as I'm sure others contemplating the 50D will be. Nice job with the details and agree w/ your self-critique. Nice to see an action shot of these little guys!

Thanks to all for the encouragement and guidance. I'll work on some of the other files from this shot also. The 50D was a bit of self indulgence. My old 40D goes to my wife, and in return, her 20D has been sent off for infra-red conversion for me. Right now it's snowing a ton outside and work keeps me from getting out as often as I'd like. By the way Denise, both this female and a male were shot at Forsythe this past weekend.
