I need to get a polarizer for my f4 500mm Nikon lens. No one seems to have the C-PLIL drop in. I was wondering if I bought the cheaper Nikon 52mm circular Polarizer Glass Filter II (Slim) would it work in that lens. Thanks Rod
Being a Canon guy I am not going to answer this from a having tried this perspective, but with a Canon lens you could do this I think but you would have to turn the lens upside down to get the filter out as you would not have the drop-ins handle to get it out. Also, if there is any kind of indentation inside the lens that the filter could lodge into, it may prove difficult to get it out.
You could attach duct tape to the glass frame as a way to get it out and secure it inside the lens as you travel around since the drop-in is holding it in place.
Slim filters generally are larger in diameter. The reason being the element is a bit oversized and the height of the ring shorter then a normal filter. This helps with vignetting on wide-angle lens. However, the outside diameter of these filters is greater then a normal filter.
Specs on websites are generally limited to the screw size but not the true outside diameter of the filter's meter ring. With the Canon drop-in, you can screw in a slim-line as well as a regular diameter filter, both 52mm screw mount and the slim-line will not fit in due to the increased diameter.
IF the Nikon drop-in will accept a 52mm filter, I am betting that a regular non-slim filter will work just fine. That is what I do.
