Two Day Old Sandhill Crane Chick - Going Strong!! - S.W Florida

In my previous post I mentioned that one egg hatched and one to go. In the past two days, the Cranes have been focusing more with the new born chick leaving the second egg alone in the nest for a long period of time. I'm hoping the second egg will make it. In this image, you can clearly see the second egg.

After one day of being born, the Cranes took this chick for a walk. To my surprise, they walked about 40 yards (one way) and back to the nest for the evening.

    More to come!!

    Canon 40D, 500mm L @ f/5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO 400, Manual Exposure, RAW, Tripod, Almost Full Frame.

    Thanks!

    Maxis:

Another lovely image. I like the attention the adult is paying to the egg, and the chick to the parent. I don't know if an adult can sense an egg is not viable, or if they tend to ignore the late hatching eggs?

    Hi Randy,

I'm not really sure if that's the case. However, when the parents get back to the nest, they check the egg and sit on it. They left the nest with the remaining egg for a while with the sun high in the sky. Perhaps John can help us with that behavior.

    Thank you for your words!

This is an outstanding image, Maxis, not only in its technical aspects, but in the story. Thanks for sharing.

Nice image. I like the look of the chick towards the mother and the mother's look toward the egg. Color and detail top it off.

This is not only an excellent Avian image but a wonderful PJ photo. What a strong story. Striking image, with the ability to revisit the site and continue the tale. I am jealous! I eagerly look forward to your upcoming images and keep my fingers crossed for the successful hatching of the second egg. - John

Technically this looks fantastic to me. Artistically.... it's even better. I find it really difficult to frame and compose birds with such long necks and legs. This one is composed beautifully and the moment captured shows great timing on your part.

Nicely done capturing this moment. Truly one of those a picture is worth a thousand words moments.

Might be inclined to remove the single errant hair in the nape of her neck

    Maxis,
Another super interaction of adult and young. I believe the chicks are usually born no more than 3 or 4 days apart. Keep us posted.
