These birds are very skittish - didn't have time to correct my camera settings before it flew off - 1/400 @f10 (!) Canon Mark 3, 500 f4 handheld (I was on a boat, used knees as tripod). Don't know whether the effect of the blurred wings in this setting works or not. The image has required minimal alteration except for cropping.

    Thanks,
    Debbie

    Hi Deborah,
Love this action capture...I like the splash of the water left behind, and the motion blur of the wings...recommendations...you need to tone down the hot whites on the head, and clone out the green reed thats touching the duck's bill...aside from this, I like it, a big congrats...looking forward to your next one...:)

Fantastic capture !!! Blurred wings are fine Deborah !! Not sure what were you up to having the camera set up at f 10.0 !!! .... best to expect the unexpected !!!

I'm not much into cloning things out but for this one I might go all out an evict the two reeds close to the bill... you got one fine image !!!

Hi deborah - expect him to fly out of the frame any sec - the implied action in this shot is really good. Agree with toning down the whites on the head - you could do this through a multiply layer - you will find a link in the eductaional resources forum.

    Looking forward to more :)

Thanks for the comments - shall check out the educational forum to find out how to tone down the whites, something I haven't attempted yet. As for the reeds...my fault for not checking my settings, if I'd opened up they would have been less sharp and obtrusive. However, my personal feeling is not to clone them out, prefer to keep my images as true to what I captured as possible.

Have tried to tone down the whites - given my lack of expertise with PS I ended up using Lightroom and the adjustment brush - think I managed to get back a bit more texture in the face however this remains a work in progress as I experiment more with PS and Lightroom.
