    Default Turkey Vulture fly-by

I was happy to have my first images of Turkey Vultures in flight (as opposed to on a carcass or fence post). A couple of them made some nice fly-bys after circling the area. Taken from an outing on the Hooptie Deux last week. Out of sight below the frame there are about 10 spoonbills, countless ibises, a couple of curlews, a dozen oystercatchers, and a couple of Reddish egrets. Quite a sight!!

Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/7.1, ISO 500, handheld, just about full-frame (cropped for composition).

Great light, wing position and details. I'm wondering what it would look like if the blue spot between the wings were foliage, too.

Very nice flight shot. I like the light and the detail in the wings.

    Hi Daniel,

Nice meeting you last week! I like this image a lot. Besides the other good points mentioned, I think you also got excellent head angle and eye contact here. Something that is too often neglected in BIF images.

    Daniel:

You have managed to make a vulture look good! Agree with the above comments re: head angle, lighting and composition. Once again, its the photographer, not the equipment, that makes the image.

    Cheers

    Randy

Great looking image... really like the wing position, and the light on this guy is awesome.

Superb job here Daniel and what a great eye contact! Composition works fine for me and I only whish for a less light in the upper part of the BG. Well done!

You managed to photograph an 'ugly' bird looking pretty good! Hand held too! Agree with Axel about the light spot between the wings.
