Florida Avian Photography in the 1940's

On Flickr, the Florida State Archives routinely posts public domain images of Florida History. I loved this picture which was taken in St. Pete circa 1946. Who needs monster lenses when back in the day, avian photography could be done with a TLR.

talk about birds who are not shy huh?

I wonder if anyone can recognize the location?

I just love those hats. Who is the idiot that decided Men were not going to wear hats anymore? They were and still are cool IMHO.

Alfred, and you note how the young one is using proper technique by getting eye level with the birds....

Actually JKF decided that hats were not chic anymore. So goes fashion for men. What he pres does, most others do. The guy on the right looks dis-interested.

Some interesting history behind this pic - the building in the background is the old building that was at the end of the St. Petersburg Pier. Eventually, it was torn down. So what's there now?

Yep. It's an icon out here in Tampa Bay (although sadly it is poorly maintained). When I was younger my parents would take us there. Just at the foot of the building there was an area where you could feed the Pelicans. I'm not sure it's allowed anymore but they would come right up to you like that with their giant mouths gaped.

PS - Michael, I'm totally with you. Those hats are rad. I have one I wear every now and then. Ha.

Phil thanks for identifying the location. As a history buff, I find it sad that towns would rather tear everything down and build useless new buildings instead of restoring the original ones. Thank God they've not leveled Ybor City and replaced them with boring office buildings and strip malls.

Got to get a hat like that. I would make it look so cool.

PS Michael, the BPN hat made you look really cool. Way to represent.

Well, none of the guys said it, so I'll say it just to show we females have sympathy for you.... "Why couldn't JFK had decided TIES were out, and kept the hats?"

    :)

    Great photo!
