    Default Magpie

    Hi

I was sitting out waiting to photograph some brown hares the other day and saw a potential new mini project to get some magpie and jay flight shots, which I haven't done previously and will work on over the next couple of weeks. This is my first attempt which I am sure can be improved upon in the days to come as I get more accustomed to the comings and goings of the birds and assuming I don't get distracted by brown hares!

    Taken with 1Dmk3 and 500mm lens at ISO 800 F4 -0.33 EV 1/5000s

    Cheers

    Rich:

I like how close to the ground he is, somehow puts him in context better for me.

Looks very sharp. I might give it a touch more room to the left if available, but it is quite nice as cropped.

The whites don't look burnt, but I don't see a lot of detail in those feathers.

Thanks so much. I really enjoyed the image. When I was a kid, my family travelled west many times, and I always loved the Magpies.

    Cheers

Thats just beautiful! I'm not sure I'm as crazy about the in focus grass blades or if I'd give them the same blur as the rest of the BG?

Nicely done! Tough exposure, and it looks to me like the whites could be toned down just a bit. I agree with Mike about the grass just above your copyright. Good luck with your project!

I love it, the pose is perfect IMO, light is nice and exposure looks very good to me, good comp and detail too. Congratulations!

Impressive image Rich ... particularly framing/tracking with the 500 !! Agree with the sharp grass grabbing attention but all else if just fine !! Looking forward to more !! Big Congrats !!!

Real nice focus Rich, whites seem a bit bright, excellent bg.

Many thanks for your comments and suggestions. Hopefully some jay shots will follow.

Very impressive, and the low level flight does it even more. Not the easiest of exposures with both whites and blacks in bright sunlight but you have come through fine. I can live with the slightly "brighter" whites.
