Looking for all suggestions, especially on cropping this image. My first thought is to crop off the left side, but is the right side too distracting?

Hi Tommy - you certainly have the eye contact on this one -- good job.
I actually dont mind this as presented - the green leaves on the left and right add to the story (nclusion of the habitat), you could also crop vertical to place more emphasis on the direct eye contact with the bird. I did play around withthis myself - but personally I prefer as presented.
I like it as it is, too. The leaves on the right side give it depth so you can see that he was peeking up over the leaves to see you, and that makes it all the more engaging, for me.
