    Hi Lesley,

Too bad you're not posting any background information and technical specs...that makes it more difficult to comment. I like the low angle here...but the lightsource looks slightly artificial. Did you use flashlight to illuminate the bird? If so, it might be a bit too harsh for this photograph. Great sharpness and pleasing colors. Sure an interesting shot.

I think it doesn't matter how a photo is made, if it's good it's good, if it's bad it's bad, right :-)

    hereby some more information:
I laid down on a landing-stage that explains the low angle, no flash used, just the regular sunlight (which we have way to little in Holland :-)

    exif: ISO 200, F8, 1/1000, -0.7.

    thanks for your comment Jasper.

    kind regards
    Lesley

I'm sure Jasper can speak for himself but the purpose of the specs is to see your settings and if there was a problem with the image it might be due to the settings which could be brought to your attention. Remember, this is a site that all of us learn from and seeing the specs add to others knowledge.

It is a beautiful image in many ways, but I wish the head was on a brighter area of the background. Right now it gets a bit lost. The creamy water, good reflection, sharp image and interesting light are all very appealing to me.

One thing I might mention to Jasper: If use Firefox, and I would highly recommend it, you can easily download an EXIF viewer and install it. Right click on an image, pick EXIF viewer from the list, and thats about it. Of course some people use software that doesn't include EXIF data with the image (definitely not Adobe), and some people purposely hide it (what are they hiding I always wonder?).

Back to the images. The first one first(naturally):Technically extraordinary, and well composed. The major problem is there is what I would call color imbalance, from the large yellow area on the right. It does have a counterbalace being the yellow of the bill, but I feel it to be inadequate.
The second image is much better in this regurd, and therefore is, in my opinion a better photograph. (don't get me wrong, they are both great). The interaction of water surface with the orange/red colors is quite interesting as well. Well done! regards~Bill
