Venice is indeed a good place to practice BIF. You did well capturing the whole bird in the frame and acquiring focus. Now work on the lighting. In this case, fill flash would have lit the shadowed part of the bird, if indeed this is not a big crop and you were fairly close. Nice effort.
Pose is nice, typical of these species, sharpnes looks very good IMO, color of the sky is a bit oversaturated to me and I would add more room to the left so the bird has a little more space towards where´s flying. Congratulations!
Good critique by Ramon and Susan. The light is totally against you, making the underwings and head dark and the rim light borderline hot Difficult angle to deal with.
Keep them coming!
Fabs:
The Egret caught me off guard.. Came from the wrong direction and this was the best shot I could get.. I asked him to come over my right shoulder and he came over my left..:D
With 275mm of focal length, fill flash is a good idea. Not living in Florida, most of my flight shots are done at 700mm plus; at that focal length fill flash isn't nearly as helpful. I agree with the great suggestions by both Susan and Ramon, along with Fabs' observation about light.
