    Default Which Flash Bracket?

I was wondering if anyone here uses a flash while photographing birds/nature and if so, which bracket system do you use?

I'm not sure this matters, but I will be using a Canon 5D, 580EX II on a RRS ballhead.

    Thanks,
    Paul

This is what I use with my 500mm. I made my own extension allowing the flash to be higher.

    Good luck!

Hi Paul need more info to help !!

What lens are you using? If is not a super tele you might want to place it on camera, if a bracket is needed you will need a bracket that will clamp on to the lens plate. Might look in Arties store and will find the exact thing you need.

The bracket I use attaches to the Wimberly head and if using the Mongoose it has its own dedicated bracket.

I agree with Maxis on Wimberley.
RRS and Kirk are also options.

    Paul,

Knowing what len(s) you are using will help us answer. The link the Maxis posted is a good place to start. It is the system that I use.

    Maxis, Alfred, James & Robert,

Thank you for your responses. I currently have a Canon 400 f/5.6. However, I am also thinking to the future as I plan to to go longer. I have been looking and leaning towards the Wimberley Telephoto bracket as I currently use an RSS ball head. I haven't decided on whether or not to eventually go with a Wimberley head or Mongoose type head.

Judging from your answers it looks like Wimberley would be the way to go.

    Regards,
    Paul

    Paul,

Wimberley works best IMO. Consider that in the future.

    Happy to help!

    Maxis,

Is the Wimberley overkill with my 400mm? Or a good place to start?

    Paul,

I use the same flash bracket set up with my 400mm f/5.6 L with a ballhead AND the 500mm with the Wimberley.

An inexpensive alternative useful in many cases is the Stroboframe QuickFlip 350. It quickly adjusts for shooting from horizontal to vertical, is sturdy, and costs only about $50 at B & H.
