    I find although sometimes I can get closer I have to back away to reduce the possibility of the bird flying out of the frame, thus more cropping.

    Big welcome to BPN, Jack :)

    Great first post, neat acrtion and great DOF for f/2.8
    I think there may be too much room on top, taking some off would make a stronger image.

    Well caught, Jack. I would be tempted to use a sightly smaller aperture to give more DOF and thus leeway with the bird moving from the point of focus acquisition. I agree with Fabs suggestion to crop from above and I would smooth out the light and dark streak in the bottom left corner

    Hi Jack - nice first post - good eye contact and HA -- would crop some from the top as mentioned.
