Very awesome. What accounts for the fogging effects?

No fog present - it was sunset - fogging effects caused by lens flare... here is the story behind the shot...

..pure luck - guess some would call it vision.

Gannet colony is on a cliff top - sun sets in the direction that the bird is looking - on this evening the clouds had extened right around to the left - hence I was able to shoot with sidelighting and still get the sunlit clouds in the bg. The gannet himself was not located on the top of the cliff - he was sort of down over the side of the cliff popping his head up every now and again to see what I was up to - I had my gitzo as low as I could get it - I was sort of in a bit of a depression on top of the cliff and there were some humps and bumps between myself and the bird - I think a lot of the bottom section is perhaps some lens flare as well.

I would have liked a bit more body of the bird in the shot - but what you see here is basically what I could see down and over the cliff side.

Long story - sorry:) -- I Have a few more from around the same time - think this is the best though.

It's a wonderful picture Lance. Sweetly poigniant is my best verbal description. Maybe you could brighten the face just a little, especialy the eye, but I have no nits to improve this wonderful shot.

Great shot Lance, wonderful light and composition. I presume this is at Point Danger, I must arrange for a visit. Haven't been there since I got my digital gear.

    cheers Rob

 Lance, this is just awesome. Perfect BG, pose and exposure, etc, etc. One of the best gannet shots I've seen anywhere. And you know what they say about luck...the harder you work, the luckier you get! Great work.

    Wow wow wow

Simply gorgeous. I personally like that you cannot see that much of the body - it gives the image an ethereal dimension

Not sure if your gannets are as nice-looking as ours Lance, but your image has done them justice! Nothing really to add to the above, but I just love the colour and the blur. Very nicely done indeed!

John - I dont think our gannets are as good looking as yours - but you know how it is - the grass is always greener on the other side

    Lance,
First: WOW! WOW! WOW! Perfect! A vote for going on the BPN home page.

I'm trying to understand how this is lens flare. Based on your description, could the fog toward the bottom be due to out-of-focus foreground objects?

HI mclark - i assume it is partially lens flare, the rest is just guessing - light was changing quickly and I was quickly tring to get something close to what I had envisaged -- this guy was not my primary subject -- I only noticed him after he continually popped his head up and down as if he was trying to catch my attention. As i Mentioned he was down over the side of the cliff and the sun would have been close to 45 degrees to the right. I only managed one shot with a decent head angle - the other 3 or 4 shots all had unusable HA - all have the same effect at the bottom of the shot.

Could very well be OOF foreground objects as well.
