    Default Tripod Head Help Please.

Ok, I have the Wimberley II Gimbal head and love it, even when using the 70-200 IS at weddings its a fine head and to me worth the weight. I have a tripod set up with this head and its great when I want to use my 300 2.8 IS. This is a great setup when I will need nothing but long lenses.

Now my questions. I at times want to shoot with lenses other then long heavy lenses. When I shoot landscapes, I need another option as I can not attatch the camera to this head.

I want a head that I can still use my long lenses, but if I want to throw on a 85 1.2 I can and still use a tripod.

Is there a way to mount both to any type of head with out having to take the lens plates of my long lenses.

I may want to shoot birds in the morning and High School Seniors in the afternoon and do not want to spend too much time changing over lens plates to allow me to do this. I am fine having 2 tripod setups, just wondering if there are any heads that I can use the Wimberley lens plates on, and also a camera plate?

    Am I making any sense.

Denny Any head can use the plates !!

Would suggest some sort of ball head Lots of choices If you want a very small unit try the Giottos 14 oz ballhead (can get from Artie) or if you want a larger head check out the Really Right Stuff heads ... can be ordered for using arca type plates which is what you are using now !!!

Thanks, I did not know the plates from Wimberley were Arca type plates that will make it much easier. I like this system so much will be switching all my tripods/camera stands to this.

    I opted for an Arca-Swiss head http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=469925&is=REG

But not happy with the quick lock or the camera plate, will be switching over to the Wimberley quick connect and plate, also not sure I need the double pan.

    Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to a device that allows you to attach your camera to the Wimberley head.

RRS has a similar setup using their MH-01 monopod head:

Be very careful with these things--they are highly unbalanced. Make sure you lock the Wimberley pivot tight after every adjustment--one slip and the whole thing come crashing down around the pivot.

I tried the RRS setup a while back and almost trashed my 135/2. Good thing the front rim of the lens took the brunt and the glass was safe. Never used the setup since then. Don't want to push my luck again, don't know when it's going to run out :)

    Am I missing something?

You want to be able to handle big glass in the morning and without to much fuss, switch to small lenses in the afternoon? Why not use a ballhead & Wimberly Sidekick for the morning shoot, remove it from your afternoon shoot and use just the ballhead?
