I went to a camera show the other day and picked up a new toy, a Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS. I was so excited, threw on a 2x extender to see what this guy could do. The only thing around was a raccoon who was dieing to have his picture taken. So I obliged. ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, EF 300mm f/2.8 + 2x Extender, 600mm (Handheld), Spot Metering, Auto Exposure, Auto WB. Can't wait to chase some birds.

    Hey Mr. Waas,
I'm glad you like your new toy...:D The composition is good...I like this tight up close in your face pose...I like the reflection in the eyes...the details are super. I would suggest on toning down the warm spots to the right of his face...aside from this, a job well done...just make sure to print a copy for the little guy, so he can take it back to his family...:D:p:cool:

Wow! This is some close up! Is this full frame or did you crop? Love the reflections in the eyes! Agree with Gus on toning down the warm spots.

Thia image was cropped just a little on the top and left side. I used a Canon 50D with 1.6 crop factor.

    Nice toy !!!

btw don't remember if you you had a full frame camera but if not the magnification is not 600 but 900 !!! Raise that ISO Very seldom will I go down to 200 ... and would use a different metering mode, spot is tricky !!!

HI Richard - repost is good - definetly agrre with Al on the spot metering - I used to use it all the time - until I discovered the joys of Matrix.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I was shooting with a Canon 50D, 1.6 crop factor. I was using a lower ISO to see how far I could push this lens handheld and it didn't disappoint me. As to the spot metering, that was a test. I almost always use evaluative metering, unless the lighting dictates. Thanks for the comments, always appreciated.

Richard, congrats on the new glass and the nice image! Hope that some of those who are concerned about IQ on the 50D look at this forum once in a while. I think we do quite well with this camera and this shot proves it!
