Was really hot today. This BHK spent some time on a branch with wide open beak before deciding to swim in our pool. Spent a few moments preening and looked much cooler!

    Thank You Posts

Good preening pose, but harsh light you had to deal with. The light angle wasn't the bes either with the face hidden in shadow. Vertical comp was a good choice but as posted I would put more room at right instead of at left...when putting empty space it's usually best to put it where the subject is looking towards regardless of body position. Is this a big crop?

Hi Daniel, thanks for commenting. No, it's not a big crop but I did crop more from the left.

Pose is nice, but, as Daniel pointed out, the light is harsh and there is some contra-shading. I would add that the image lacks contrast and color presence. Perhaps an adjustment layer and some levels or curves would help the contrast. ;-)

Neat bird and nice behavior. Eye could use some more sharpening looks like the focus is on the tail feathers but can be corrected a bit with selective sharpening

I have just got a new screen which is still uncalibrated. The bird looked almost too sharp on it. I have added contrast and sharpened.

Hi Jeni, great capture, but you are getting some super advice above that just about covers it, some hard things to work with in this shot, but again, very nice capture.
