I took this photo in December of a Bald eagle coming up out of the nest. The next stop was a limb to the eagle's left. Canon EOS 40D, 500mm lens, 1.4X extender, f/11, shutter speed 1/800, ISO read out of 500, shooting in Av mode. This was at sunset. I look forward to your comments.
Hi James - must have been a magnificent sight - I like the pose and the fact you were out shooting in the best of times light wise.
For my personal taste - I find the eagle getting a little lost in the shot - a combination of the gorgeous yellow light and the colour of the bird / trees being so close - in other words not enough seperation from the BG for me, but thats just my tastes!
Looking forward to seeing more of this guy - keep em coming :)
It is amazing at how well the eagle blends in with the pine tree. I never realized that even the shape of the feathers are similar in design to the pine bark.
Hi James I like the pose and setting Great timing !!!
Got a couple of suggestions. From a tech point of view would have gone to manual exposure, the meter has to be changing as it picks different pats of the bg. Will go from under exposure to over exposure in the blink of an eye. As presented the white neck area has little detail. Also would shoot wide open since you are far enough its not a problem, more concern with shutter speed.
Image wise you did come up for a clean bg for an nesting image and it is very appealing !!! Big Congrats !!
On my monitor, this image looks over-exposed: a lot of brightness but not much darkness, not to mention the overblown white in the throat area of the eagle. I know the histogram look OK, but I think in this case, a better exposure reading should be one based on the eagle, the subject of interest in this photo as far as I can tell. Personally, I would do something to the white balance, too.
Then, as Lance has said, more separation of the eagle from the background would have helped, too. I think a change in perspective should help as well.
