Welcome to Avian, Bill. I like your comp here and the pano crop works well. Light angle is not ideal leaving the face in shade but you have some nice feather details on the wings.
I like what you tried with the pano crop - I like the mood with the late day (?) pinkish hues on the ice. Head angle on your subject is the biggest detriment here. Having the head angle at least parallel to us may have prevented the face from being in the shadow...and a couple of degrees towards us would definitely have lit up the face. I'm admittedly undecided about the feather.
Thanks for the comments.
Time of day was just after dawn.
Not really a rule of thirds-- more like quarters composition and I was looking to balance out the composition by including the feather.
This was my first use of a 400mm 5.6 prime with a 1.4 extender on a MkIIn and I'm not sure I had the horsepower to just crop the eagle alone.
The feather had just fallen from the wing of another eagle that was harassing the eagle in the image and I have that sequence. The problem was I was downwind and never got a front view of the aggressor.
The subject eagle never really turned towards the light and I agree that it would have made a stronger image if it had.
Thanks again.
