    This is one of my pictures i took yesterday.

    400mm...f/5.6...1/1250s...Iso 400

    Good eye contact and eye is nice and sharp. Owl is a little tight in frame and light angle is not ideal as it leaves half the bird in shade. Closing the aperture a little would have given better DOF (increasing ISO may have been an option depending on camera). I would clone out the OOF branch bottom left.

    I agree with Tony on all points. Would you have been able to walk around to face the right side of the post instead? This would have put the sun directly behind you for better illumination of the owl (as is half the face and body are in the shade). Good stare by your subject!
