Default Help me with WB settings for birding.

As spring migration approaches I want to get the bodies dialed in and figure out an easier system for setting WB. Auto WB on the newer Nikon bodies is getting better, but it isn't always reliable and varies between the D300 & D700.

Using an expodisc isn't all that convenient with long lenses.

I made a drop insert that fits in the filter holder on my long lenses that works OK, but it's a pain to keep changing WB as light changes.

After researching UniWB, I think I am correct that while it is a great tool, it meant is meant more for exposure than for white balance.

Shooting a gray card is about as convenient as the drop in filter.

There must be a better option and I would love to know how you all set WB in the field!! Thanks in advance!

I shoot automatic white balance in the RAW format. If needed, I correct my white balance in Lightroom. I don't normally worry too much about perfect WB in the field.

    Same here Michael

Also keep in mind the best times to photograph like early morning late afternoon you don't want to turn that WB to mid day!!! Use auto WB and adjust to taste in the conversion.

thanks to both of you.. any thoughts on UniWB for exposure control??

The idea came from a fellow birder who swears by it. Just don't want to over-look something I should be considering.

Lots of info on the internet regarding the UniWB I like simple and can get the right exposure most of the time within 1/3 stop ... and many times without a meter. I can't see the advantage for me, just personal.

I have heard about this. An interesting link on this process that is a bit long and involved - the reason I have not yet delved deeply into it.

The person to ask about UniWB is BPN member Jim Fenton, who uses it with some regularity.

    +1

I don't deviate from Auto WB unless I am shooting a portrait or shooting sports. ESPECIALLY when shooting sports. AWB can't handle the changing light frequency at most fields and gyms. With wildlife / landscape we are fortunate in that the sun is a relatively steady light source...
