Default My Canon 50D has died- I think!

I don't suppose there is any answer to this other than take the camera for repair, but I will run it past you in case someone thinks of something so obvious I have overlooked it.
I was just taking some calibration shots for Neat Image and after reaching ISO 1600 the camera just stopped working completely. No signals no LEDs no screen - now't.
I thought it must be the batteries so I replaced them, I then removed the twin battery pack and put in a single battery that was in my 20D (which does work) Still no joy with the 50D. I cleaned all contacts on batteries and in the battery holding with a clean dry lens cloth. Still no joy. I placed two different batteries in the twin pack and put that on the 20D, that worked, I then put the twin pack on the 50D and it still didn't work.

I have turned the camera off and on repeatedly, pressed the shutter and pressed all buttons on the camera and still it is as dead as a dodo. Have I missed anything any advice would be gratefully received.

Is it possible to attach an external power source? It does sound as if it just broke. I hope they will just give you a replacement.

I had the same thing happen to my new 40D a year ago. It suddenly turned itself off in the middle of a photo session and was completely dead. After trying everything that you have been doing, I sent it in for repair under warranty and it has been fine ever since.

You should try removing the small clock battery as well as the other batteries. This will force a reboot of the camera and reset everything.

I agree with John, before sending it is remove the clock battery and clear all custom functions. If this doesn't work send it in for a new one.

Jon, by the sound of things you are using a grip attachment. Try dumping the grip and just use one battery directly in the camera. My guess is you have a faulty connection between the grip and the camera body, or the switch that turns off the camera when you open the battery door is not working properly. Eliminate the grip from the equation and then see how you stand. Is it a Canon grip or third party?

Yep did this too Tim, I have taken the camera to Lehmann's in Stoke - should take about 1 week to get it back

    Hi Jon,

I believe this problem was rectified in the most recent 50d firmware update. You might want to update if you haven't yet!
