    Default Rain Covers

    Good day all:

I would appreciate your input on your favorite rain covers for a 500mm f/4 (Nikon).
I am familar with the Think Tank Hydrophobia, but am open to other options.

I did a quick search, but didn't turn up anything on the site.

    Cheers

    Randy

Randy the Think Tanks is the best. For lighter weather and portability try the Storm Jacket !!!

    Randy,

I use the Think Tank on a Canon 500 F4 and it is great. I agree with Alfred and Ed, the Storm Jacket is also a good choice as the Think Tank may be overkill under most conditions. If you decide on the Think Tank don't forget the eyepiece.

Another option, although I have no experience with it, is made by Kata

I have used a Storm Jacket in the past, inexpensive and effective.

The above mentioned all are good, but I suggest the Aquatech covers, the only covers I would consider for my gear. They are expensive but worth it. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...eld_Navy_.html

I use Tenba rain covers (500 f/4, 300 f/2.8, and smaller). Works great for light rain. Never had to use it in really heavy rain, even in Alaska (luck?). They are a gortex (like?) cloth attaching with velcro. Very small and lightweight.

The Think Tank is much too big for anything as small as a 100-400.

Where do I check out the Storm Jacket?

    Thanks,

    Question

Do any these options listed below allow for the use of a flash with a Better Beamer attached?

    Thanks!

    Hi Mike-
That's an excellent idea. The Storm Jacket would most likely not work for that, in it's current version. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a "rain jacket" that allows the use of a full size flash, let alone a Beamer. It would be an easily made "accessory" for one of the manufacturers to make though, I would think.

    cheers

totally agree with you. Aquatech are the best but they are pricey. The material that they are made with breaths so there is less condensation build up under the cover than the plastic or nylon covers.

I just received my Kata E-702 & E-704 covers. I haven't used them "in the elements" yet, but the quality is top notch & I have great faith in their ability to protect my gear when used properly. The price really was decent too @ about $110 before shipping with Amazon. The E-702 is the main camera cover and will also protect a short lens attached to the camera body. I also bought the 704, which attaches to the 702 to protect large lenses (up to 650mm). I'll try to do a review as soon as they are put through their paces.

I went with the Think Tank Hydrophobia. It seems well made and I like the easy access. I will be taking it to Newfoundland this summer and giving it a good workout.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Michael,

If it is raining hard enough to use the camera rain cover... flash will light up the drops and I typically will not use it.. The newer cameras and 580EX II will work in the rain uncovered. If you do want to cover the gear, I simply cover the flash with food wrap (SARAN OR CLING WRAP). This also works very well around a fixed lens when using only AF, and it will work for bodies when not changing cards often. Moreover, it does not flap in the wind. That said I use TT Hydophobia covers on the big guns, and I do have the Kata when necessary for short gear.

    Best,

    Chas
