Thank you to everybody who posted advice on perch setups in my previous pictures. With your comments in mind, I decided to try a ground feeder setup with several twigs, reeds and stumps placed near the birdseed. I gave the improved setup a try and was very satisfied with the outcome. The thinner perches look a lot better with these small birds. This maple twig seemed to be a favourite. The bird is about 12 inches above the snow.

Hi Joel...I like the diagonal red branch, lighting, backround, exposure and position of the subject. I would like to see a bit cropped from the left and in my monitor the wing looks a bit soft...Shooting at F8 would of helped but I can see the dilema..you were shooting at 1/800s and couldn't afford a slower speed. I have a D300 and usually shoot at iso 800 without much of a noise problem.
I love the new skinny perch at an angle. I am fine with the d-o-f. The image looks a tad bright/over-SAT-ed to me. Now you have to move your feeder to a spot that offers a more uniform BKGR.
BTW, all of the set-up stuff that you mentioned is covered in detail in ABP II....
