As I said this is my first picture post. I got my camera yesterday and played around with it today. Got pretty frustrated and disappointed with the pics I took. Learned a lot but there is so much to learn.
I know the background is too busy andthe branch shouldn't be in front of the body. I'm also sure there is a lot more wrong with the pic. but to tell you the truth I was happy this was in focus at all.

HI Roy - a Big welcome to the BPN Family:)

I like the head angle and the eye contact on your bird - this is one of the most common mistakes - Congrats.
Yes there may be other issues with the shot - BG is busy etc etc. The first thing I would concentrate on is getting to know your camera and to have a look in the educational resources forum, Id probbaly start with exposure, You are going to need to know how to add and subtract light via the exposure compensation dials.

Also turn your over exposure blinkies on and learn how to interperate your histogram.

looking forward to seeing plenty more.

    Hi Roy,
I like the capture...agree with Mr. Peters on his good advise...you need to take a couple of days and read the owner's manual and go out and practice to become familiar with your camera...the camera should be the extension of your eyes and brain...(second nature to you)...looking forward to your next one...

    Hi Roy Big Warm Welcome

Can't say it better than Lance did !!! You do have a lot of good things going in your image which is the best way to look at it ..... head, angle, placement toward the right, exposure, sharp and processing not bad !!

From looking at this one I know you are not going to be having much trouble. Take the time to know the camera, look for subjects and will do just fine !!! Looking forward to more !!!

Thank you for your encouragement. I had a friend come over yesterday to explain a few things to me about the theory of taking pictures. I also found a few videos online that have helped a bit.
I hope to head out today to experiment and put into practice some of the suggestions you have given me. It may be awhile before I have the confidence to post again.:)
