Nice pose on a great perch and good use of fill flash on one of Australia's smallest but most stunning robins. Great detail in blacks, whites and reds. Perhaps the lower catchlight could go?
Jon, other than the very minor point about the catchlight I think this has all strong elements. From exposure, sharpness, subject position, head turn and backround are all excellent. I even like his perch. Well done!
Jon, this is a fine image. Great composition and overall exposure. The red channel seems to be clipped on the forehead. It makes us lack the feathers details. You could also tone down the perch a bit.
Thanks for commenting Leo, Dave, Jonathan and Rene.
Rene, you are right about the reds. At the very last minute, I applied a saturation boost of +5 and I think it had and adverse effect on the red cap near the bill. The DNG still contains detail in this area, so not all is lost.
Great catch Jon! They are indeed gorgeous little characters. I saw my first ones about six weeks ago around the corner from home and do you thin the males would come down? LOL!
Just the second catchlight, otherwise fabulous! :)
Wonderful image John. Great pose, perch, details, background and eye contact. I would consider a small crop from the bottom.... personal taste. Did you have to go far out of Melbourne to get this bird? This is what I call inspirational.
Akos, you must have been unlucky with your Red-capped Robin. I have always found them to be extremely approachable. Eastern Curlews on the other hand...
Gerard, I shot this one near Chiltern in NE Victoria. I have however, seen them much closer to Melbourne than this. Some have seen them as close as the You Yangs near Geelong.
Juan Carlos, I will get rid of the second catchlight. Thanks.
