Photographed this LBH late in the day at Green Cay. Enjoyed watching him puruse the perimter of the pond in search of a meal. Especially like the green with the raised leg.

I am trying to focus a little bit more on habitat and behavior shots. I was beginning to forget that there was more to a bird than a perfect head turn, perfect light and perfect background. I also enjoy pictures which tell a story.

    Canon 40D, 400DO & 1.4 @ 560mm
    F5.1, 1/2000s, ISO400, manual exposure
    hand held, full frame

    C & C always welcomed and appreciated,

    Marina

    Marina,
I too like to have a bit of habitat at times when the right scene presents itself.

I really like the algae (slime :) ) on the birds legs and the light striking it, but I feel the background overpowers this beautiful creature instead of enhancing it.

When I saw this earlier this morning it blew me away, especially the algae on the legs. That is the best detail in your image for my taste anyway. I agree very much with your sentiments about capturing habitat and behavior and not necessarily just another clinical-looking portrait that is so prominent in birdie world! You did your intended 'job' very well. THe habitat is strong and busy, but not that bad for my liking at all. Thanks for sharing. :)

Really nice image, and the algae on the legs is great. The one thing I wish for is a slightly better head angle...not much, but just enough to see a bit more of the eye. I don't mind the reeds in the BG either.

I could not agree more. A true legend and Famous photographer Art Wolfe often say "Habitat is just as important as your main subject". We can also do the same!

    Keep up the good work!
