Default Junco in snow--can this be salvaged?

    Hello,

Here's a problematic image--the snow is way overexposed, but I like the bird. Short of knee-capping the bird, is there anything I can do to this snow? Can this flaw be made into a virtue?

This is seriously cropped down from a much larger picture. Olympus SP-570UZ, ISO 125, 86.3mm, f4.4, 1/50sec, handheld. Have already applied basic editing to the picture as a whole.

If it's a lost cause, so be it ...

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Massimo

    Hi Massimo,
I like the capture...a few things to consider...the base image is under exposed, you have allot of noise in the background, the bird is on the soft side not sharp, the area around the eye is too dark and the subject need more room in the front...I made a few modifications to illustrate these points...I cropped the composition by adding canvas to the right side of the frame and removed space from the top and the left side. also added canvas to the bottom to give him more leg room...the whites in the snow were at 255, thus lacking details and hot...I toned it down, adjusted the mid-tones, opened the blacks and the area around the eye and selective sharpened, and applied noise reduction in the background...see if this presents best to you...

    Gus--

All I can say is "wow." I am very grateful for the thorough critique--all spot on--and for the repost. I'll need to work through all your modifications to see how it's done. But the improvements are really significant.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It really helps a lot.

    Best,
    Massimo

Nice rework Gus. Massimo, I'd probably mess around with some of your settings. F-stop, ISO, shutter speed and such, and see which can take the crispest shot with minimal noise. Not sure if you can adjust the exposure compensation on that model of camera since I'm not an Olympus user.

Gus worked miracles !!!!! Way to go !!

Massimo its much easier to nail the exposure the first time !!! For snow you normally open one and one half but here you have a darker bg which will open the meter. Let me knonw the comp setting !!

Gus does it again :) well done my friend.

Massimo - there are a number of articles in the resources forum on exposure - lots of great info in there, be sure to have a look.

This is great--thank you all for your comments.

The short answer to Stefan's question is yes, the Olympus does have exposure adjustment (+/- button, in 1/3 stops).

The Morris article looks really good and comprehensive; I am going to work through it, and it will take some practice ...

    Thank you all,
    Massimo
