    Default Watchful Mom (Moose)

This cow and her two young ones casually grazed nearby one morning this past summer (pretty much ignoring me), but at times she would look up when a sound off in the distance was made by a ground squirrel or bird. I would have preferred more DOF, but the light was minimal and I was wanting to stay at iso400 or slower.

Image made in an unnamed meadow in the Wasatch National Forest here in northern Utah.

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

How is the 40D at ISO 800?

DOF looks pretty good. You only have the FG moose just the ever bit soft. I think sharpness is good enough on them.

Nice framing in the habitat. Well done.

I too like the basic image design and the sharpness, the expression, and the head turn on momma moose are all superb.

Love that alert gaze! Very nice. I'm seeing a cyan cast. There's some decent color information in there if you play around with it a little (levels, selective color).

    Hey John,
I like the different vegetation layers in this one. Also like the contrast in the pose between the oblivious babies and the alert mom. DOF looks ok to me.

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Robert - I find the noise on the 40D at iso800 to be too noticeable for my tastes. It does depend on the subject matter and background though. I've been very happy with the results at iso400 (and of course lower) in most situations. It would be interesting to hear others opinions as well.

David - Thanks for the suggestion. I played with a couple other versions and varied the color temp, and can see a warmer variation is definitely doable.

Lovely job capturing the vigilant mom and calves, John. You might go a little warmer. A very special image.
