    Default New camera...new shot

I received my new Mark III yesterday and had to give it a go this morning. It's the first time I have ever taken pictures with any 1D model and it was a blast and oh so fast! There were a few egrets and herons skimming and some shots turned out OK so here's one for you guys to help me with. I could have left a bit more room to the left but I kind of liked the tighter crop. Right thinking...wrong thinking?

hi matt - congrats on the new camera. love the action - looks like he got a scare. You have sharp details, good eye contact and lovely open beak pose. I would crop some from the bottom and turn it into more of a pano crop - would like some more room on the RHS.

Your whites are vey close to being over exposed (in places) - try a multiply layer in P.S. to bring some detail back in the hot spots. Turn your over exposue blinkies on and keep a eye on your histogram - whites over about 240 ish will look overexposed when posted.

    Looking forward to more :)

    Hi Matt,
I like the composition and capture...the whites are pushing the envelope at 248...you were shooting in very harsh sun light and at a bad angle. thats why your bird is cooked on one side and has shadows on the other side...The background is a tad on the dark side...you do have good details and a good head angle and good eye contact...I modified your base image by adjusting the mid-tones and lightening up the background. I toned down the whites, selective sharpened the area around the eye and the contour along the breaking feather line, also cropped into a pano, adjusted saturation and adjusted the contrast level...see if this presents best to you...looking forward to your next capture...

    Hey Lance,

I know very little about photoshop and pretty much nothing about layers but I get the gist of what you are saying from watching my father. I will have him help me with it tomorrow for sure. And now that you mention it...no images were blinking today so I will turn that on...thanks!

    Hey Gus,

I like the overall even tone of the whites you re-posted and it's a hard place to shoot a white bird because the background is very dark here so I like how you have the dark area lightened. Thanks for the help!

Thanks Oscar. I hope to get some more flight shots soon!

I looked through my shots and came up with this one for less shadows and a bit brighter. What do you guys think of the whites on this one...are they ok or still too bright? The rest of the image look OK? Thanks!

Matt is best to post only one image per post !!! We re post all we want of the the same but no new ones !!! Once you get comments there might not be anyone coming back for a second look.

Do post this one tomorrow !!

The first is a mater of taste but I'm fine with it as presented. If anything would like to see more of that trailing water behind the bird !!! .... big congrats on your new camera !!!!

btw Matt With these white birds you need soft light otherwise its just about impossible, need to expose for the whites and see how everything else looks. !!! Manual exposure is just about necessary since the bg affects the meter so much !!!

Thanks Alfred...it is tougher with the darker water for sure and I am usually shooting down at least a full stop. Thanks for the help!
