Made this photo in one of Floridas great state parks in Palm Harbor used Nikon D-70s and sigma 500mm F-4.5 1/250 at f 5.6 + 1 comp around 10am. was watching GBH hunting, and thought it had a snake, but when I downloaded photos on pc I realized it was a babyalligator.
If you look close you can see it's eye in herons beak

It's amazing what these Great Blue Herons will eat. Excellent catch and great timing.

Very interesting behavior, I wouldn't have thought they eat alligators. If this is not full frame I would give it more room and there is a slight blue cast. A bit more head turn toward you would have been nice. Keep them coming.

I am not so sure that is an alligator. There are some large amphibians called sirens that might fit this description. here is a result of a quick google search that might identify what this heron is eating: http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/s...NWR032405r.jpg

    Hey Ray -

Nice photo. Great catch for the heron. I think Milo is right, it looks like one of those large salamanders to me.
