    Default My First BIF

Another early morning.... Went to Eco Pond in Flamingo around 7am, but by 7:30 most of the birds had left so I went to Mrazek Pond and decided to try my first BIF. I just wish the sun was cooperative (in front of me). I know I need to focus a little sharper (Need some better glass). ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, Sigma 80-400mm, 400mm (Handheld). Evaluative Metering, Autro Exposure, Auto WB, No Flash (Should I use Better Beamer?) As usual, comments are appreciated.

Hi Richard - I like the pose and th eplacment in the frame - nice first effort, with BIF you need to get them before they fly past you which you have. as you noted sun in the wong position - the whites look hot on my screen and the bright highlights in the bg distract from your subject.

Practice Practice Practise - and soft light or the sun behind you - looking forward to more.

Chocolate can be toxic to birds and animals...the darker the chocolate the worse it is. It does take a rather large amount to be a problem.

This was taken from the article from
    Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Do not feed birds any foods that contain chocolate. An ingredient of chocolate—theobromine—is toxic to birds just as it is to dogs and cats.

This is alot better than my first BIF. I practiced on buzzards as well as seagulls. (not that i'm real great at it !) I have the same lens as you in a Nikon and it is slow to focus. Makes it harder to catch a BIF at the right moment. Good job! Also a word of warning. I have a beamer and I fried the front of my flash taking a backlit shot. Cost me 200.00 to have it fixed.

Did well Richard, particularly being able to focus with the back light ... and expose !!! Bg looks interesting !!

Flash would not help here since the shutter speed would have placed you in high speed sync, very little light going out and you needed tons !!!

Only two secrets to birds in flight besides finding birds !!! Wind and light direction You need the wind and light to be form the same direction and got it made !!!

All techs covered Richard. I have found you need to tak a lot of shots before you get some good ones that are sharp. Glad to see you trying the birds!!

Got your message after we left the park, but we found Gus on the way out and stopped at the same place.
You did very well considering how harsh the light was. BTW thanks for the glove, they came in handy.

Great looking pose Richard. Looks like the bird is just coming off a diving board doing a swan dive, no pun intended.
Lots of good advice, fast lense, practice and get the birds with sun at your back and flying into the wind (slows them down). And keep that shutter button down when taking the shot.
    Dave
