What part of New Jersey was this taken?

You had to be in a boat.

How does anyone walk through mangroves that thick?

I enjoy this type of composition.

Joseph, I took this shot in Florida, the mangroves were pretty neat and yes I took this shot from a canoe.

I get nervous thinking about taking a camera into the waters like that.

Last year I rolled my first canoe right over a log-Lost my camera ,lense and asst. gear - I have been afraid ever since. I now carry my camera in a water tight case that floats!

This one seems a bit soft to me, Denise. I keep thinking that my eyes will land on some detail or other and nothing pops up. I also wonder if you have a color cast on this as the back trees appear to have a bit of a lavendar hue to them. (Or is it just time for me to recalibrate my monitor???)
